Needle-punched non-woven geotextiles are made from polypropylene fibres that are tangled together in a needle-punching process. The fibres may be made in continuous or short lengths and achieve their strength by interlocking. Needle-punched non-woven geotextiles have excellent water flow rates and are used for filtration of soil fines. Needle-punched non-woven geotextiles have been used in drainage applications including trench drains (also known as french drains), as a wrapping for perforated pipe, for erosion protection, for the separation of a roads sub base and base course, and combined with three-dimensional structures to create prefabricated drains. They are also commonly used with geomembranes to provide a protective cushion. Needle-punched non-woven primary functions: filtration; separation; protection; drainage.

Features
Non-woven needle-punched geotextiles consist of a continuous mat of small fibres that looks much like a felt. These fibres provide drainage of water, retention of soil fines, and strength. The most effective use of non-woven fabrics is in the drainage applications where their water flow properties help promote water flow in the desired direction.

Typical Uses
Non-woven needle-punched geotextiles are the most versatile type of geotextiles. They can be used for water flow and for separating dissimilar soil types drainage applications. The heavier fabrics can be used by themselves as drains under railways, and in vertical and horizontal applications. Heavier fabrics are also used as a cushion for geomembrane protection. Non-woven needle-punched fabrics are not usually used for reinforcement applications, however they can be used along with a geogrid when reinforcement and drainage are required silmultaneously.
